The Ashes of Al'ar grant their wielder the ability to summon an epic phoenix mount. The item has a very low drop chance.
In addition to its unique look, the mount is also faster than most epic flying mounts, at 310% increase instead of the normal 280%. This is the same speed as the armored netherdrake mounts and frostwyrm mounts available to the top 0.5% of those participating in Arenas, as well as the proto-dragon achievement rewards from the meta-raiding achievements from Naxxramas and Ulduar, the Onyxian Drake available from Onyxia, and Mimiron's Head available from Yogg-Saron in Ulduar. The achievement What A Long, Strange Trip It's Been also rewards a Violet Proto-Drake, which so far is the only 310% speed mount obtainable without having to do raids or Arenas.
The Ashes of Al'ar works similar to the Dragoon in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, except parts don't need to be collected, it just simply flies across the stage at a moderate speed. If any player can mount it as it makes its journey across the stage, they'll ride into the foreground on it back and a crosshair will appear, like with the Dragoon item. Hitting opponents will cause 60% damage and heavy knockback. The player will then drop from the top of the stage in the center of the screen after using this item.
